Situated east of Corpus Christi, this barrier island is full of thrilling beachside activities and is home to a spectacular state park. If you want to swim, kayak, mountain bike, or hike, this is the perfect spot for you.

If you’re in just for the sand and surf, then head to this laid-back, sandy beach stretching eight miles across the Rio Grande from Mexico. Rustic and charming in equal measure, it’s the best place for fishing and snorkeling.

Known to the locals as Port A, this spot boasts attractions as the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center. The expansive marshes nearby are havens for many species of birds, as well as alligators.

Visit this lovely park on the western end of the island and explore the Gulf as well as Galveston Bay. Besides the scenic coastline, you can also visit estuaries, marshes, and wetlands.

This educational aquarium plus amuseument park is a must in Galveston. Step inside and immerse yourself in three different worlds. Marvel at wild species in the Rainforest Pyramid and Aquatic Pyramid, catch a show at the theater, or relax in the sand at Palm Beach.

Matagorda County is known for fishing, thanks to the fresh water of the Colorado River plus the Gulf of Mexico. Take your position and cast your line for black drum and catfish. Or head out to sea on a chartered trip and try your luck for red snapper.

A vacation in Surfside isn’t just about lounging and swimming. True to its name, it has consistent waves that offer some of the best surfing in Texas. The shoreline near Texas Street has the finest waves in town.

If you’re an avid birdwatcher, then Bolivar Peninsula is a must. It’s an incredibly biodiverse region of the Texas Gulf Coast, rich in flora and fauna. Head to the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge and see the roseate spoonbills and snow geese.

After your beach adventures in Clute, clean the sand off and check out the Clarion at the Brazosport College Campus. This spectacular 600-seat hall hosts musical performances throughout the year.

Pack lightweight pants, shorts, and t-shirts. Bring a swimsuit, of course. If you visit in summer when there’s a heatwave and you won't be able to do laundry, be sure to pack plenty of changes of clothes.

Bring comfortable shoes that allow your feet to breath but also protect them while hiking or wandering around. Sturdy boots are a good idea if you plan to hike, and water shoes can be useful for little ones at the beach.

You’ll undoubtedly need a good camera to document epic moments for your family and friends. If you’re bringing along multiple electronic devices, pack a port or a hub from which you can concurrently charge several items.

If you intend to visit Mexico while on your vacation, bring your passport or government-issued ID. It’s good practice to photocopy the two documents and keep the originals and copies separate.

Texas sunshine is hot and bright. Bring waterproof sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats. Consider UV-protective swimwear for littler kids.
