South Carolina has a fascinating history. As one of the original 13 colonies, it was home to rich indigo and rice planters. Many of the festivals celebrated today pay homage to that past.

For history buffs, there's Revolutionary War Field Days. Held in Camden on the first weekend of November, it involves a re-enactment of an 18th-century battle between Continental and British forces.

To celebrate Gullah (West African) traditions, the Original Gullah Festival is held in Beaufort every Memorial Day weekend.

The Black Cowboy Festival in Rembert takes place in May. The festival highlights the importance of the African-American culture’s contribution to farm and cowboy life.

South Carolina's culinary heritage is proudly on display at the World Grits Festival, held in Saint George and celebrating that staple of the Southern diet - grits. The highlight of the three-day event is the 'rolling in the grits' contest, in which contestants submerge themselves in a pool filled with the porridge-like food.

Colleton County in the Lowcountry is the setting for another food festival. The Rice Festival, held in April, pays tribute to the grain that made the area famous.

Another highlight on the state's festival calender is the Pickens Azalea Festival held in April. A great day out for the family, it sees bands, arts and crafts stalls and classic cars fill the downtown area of Pickens.

This museum offers fantastic self-guided and guided tours focusing on the history of ships and aviation, and honours patriots involved in U.S. conflicts.
